At present, only one US company in the industry has realized the mass production of the external SFP28 LR optical transceiver module. This company is Maxim. Its 25Gbps optical transceiver module not only realizes small size (SFP28 size) and pluggable, but also uses Maxim's advanced digital eye pattern fine-tuning technology to separate the external optical transceiver Combo chip and controller from the TO laser head. The heat of the electric drive chip does not affect the laser, which greatly improves the reliability and performance of the product, and can continue to use the existing production line of the optical module manufacturer.

Andrew said that the target application market for 25Gbps optical transceiver modules, in addition to the 4.5G base station and the 5G base station under discussion, and the backplane connection between the data center server and the router, the connection distance can usually not exceed 50 meters.
Today's fiber-optic communications are used not only in backbone communications networks, base stations and antenna communications, but also in homes and office buildings. The backbone communication network generally adopts a 100Gbps communication rate, and is traditionally implemented by 10 sets of 10Gbps optical fiber communication combinations. Today, with the mass production of 25Gbps optical transceiver modules, only four sets of 25Gbps optical fiber communication can be realized. Today, households generally use 2.5Gbps fiber-optic communication modules. This is relatively simple and cheap. There are many manufacturers in the industry, including many domestic suppliers, such as Huawei.

The optical transceiver module generally consists of a laser transmitter, an electric signal driver, an optical receiver, an optocoupler, an electrical signal receiver and a controller. It can be used as a supplier of 2.5 Gbps electrical signal drivers and receivers, but can do 10 Gbps electrical signals. There are very few transceiver vendors, and only Maxim, Semtech and Macom can do it in the industry. To the 25Gbps LR external electrical signal transceiver, only the Maxim family is currently in mass production.
Maxim's 25Gbps external electrical signal transceiver (Combo chip) does not need to be integrated into the laser-emitting head of the metal package, so the heat dissipation during its operation will not affect the laser signal transmission and transmission, and the communication reliability and performance can be greatly improved. What's more, the Maxim 25Gbps SFP28 LR optical transceiver module eliminates the need for expensive BOX-packaged laser transmitters, but instead uses the cheaper TO Header, which greatly reduces the cost of system manufacturers.
