South Africa into Africa's first African country to phase out incandescent lamps

At the 17th Climate Change Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, South Africa's Minister of Energy, Dipuo Peters, announced that it will ban the production and sale of incandescent lamps after five years. This made South Africa the first country in Africa to phase out incandescent lamps as an inefficient lighting product. South Africa will phase out and ban incandescent products in 2016.

According to the statistics of the International Energy Agency, lighting power accounts for nearly 20% of global power generation, and 6% of greenhouse gas emissions.

However, for South Africa, digital will be very different because South Africa's electricity use is mostly heavy industry rather than home and office.
