It is reported that Microsoft Azure is the first global cloud provider to deploy AMD EPYC (,龙) processor, EPYC (霄龙) processor is deployed to Microsoft Azure next-generation L series virtual machine Lv2 series virtual machine.
AMD announced the first public cloud instance powered by AMD EPYC processors. Microsoft Azure deployed the AMD EPYC processor in its data center for the latest L-series virtual machine (VM) previews optimized for storage workloads. The Lv2 virtual machine family will leverage the high core count and connectivity support provided by AMD EPYC processors.
Scott Aylor, AMD's global vice president and general manager of enterprise solutions, said: "We are pleased to work with Microsoft Azure to deploy AMD EPYC processors to their data centers. By deploying AMD EPYC in Azure Processors, we are able to deliver superior performance in storage and other workloads, and give users the opportunity to enjoy these features. In 2018, we look forward to continuing to work closely with Microsoft Azure on more future examples."
Corey Sanders, director of Microsoft's Microsoft Azure Computing, said: "We have adopted AMD's new EPYC processor in Microsoft Azure and deployed it to our next-generation L-series virtual machine. The new Lv2 series virtual machine is high I/ O. Intensive storage products, so the EPYC processor is especially suitable for Azure customers with demanding workloads. We have deep cooperation with AMD in the design process of the next generation open source cloud hardware of Microsoft Olympus project. We think Olympus project will It is the foundation for future innovations of Microsoft and AMD. We look forward to adding more application examples to take advantage of the core density, memory bandwidth and I/O capabilities of AMD EPYC processors."
The Lv2 series uses the AMD EPYC 7551 processor with a reference frequency of 2.2 GHz and a maximum single-core frequency multiplier of 3.0 GHz. With 128 PCIe lanes per processor, AMD offers more than 33% connectivity compared to existing two-socket solutions, directly meeting the massive NVMe drive requirements.
The Lv2 virtual machine supports 8 to 64 vCPUs, and a virtual machine with 64 vCPUs can directly access 4TB of memory. These sizes support Azure advanced storage disks by default, while supporting accelerated network capabilities for maximum throughput in any cloud. With the unique capabilities of the AMD EPYC processor and Microsoft Azure, the Lv2 virtual machine is perfect for storage-intensive workloads.
The Lv2 series of examples is based on the Olympus project design that Microsoft introduced a year ago, which is Microsoft's next-generation ultra-large-scale cloud application design. This groundbreaking design is a new model for open source hardware development in the open computing project community.
