Every few days, we see that many developers and researchers have developed technologies that make the virtual reality experience closer to reality. Just about a week ago, we saw a kind of virtual reality technology that could simulate human facial expressions. At the same time, there was also a kind of smart glove named Maestro that could simulate the touched objects and virtual targets through the vibration of the fingers. Although Maestro cannot duplicate the weight of the target, the use of current and resistance can cause the entire arm to vibrate to simulate the weight of the target.
Now, several scientists from Germany have said that they are developing a new type of haptic system that can simulate the feeling of pushing or lifting a wall or a heavy object. These researchers came from the Hasso-Plattner-Institut in Potsdam and presented their latest results at the Human-Computer Interaction Conference in Denver, Colorado.
This system is mainly composed of a medical grade eight-electrode muscle stimulator (EMS) and is mounted in a backpack.
EMS is the most common muscle stimulation therapy tool that sends current through the eight electrodes to send a gentle electric pulse signal to stimulate the muscle current. If the stimulation is correct, the EMS system will let the muscles simulate the feeling of pushing against the wall or lifting heavy objects.
In early tests, trying to simulate the feeling of leaning against a wall or pushing a wall in the virtual reality world required magnetic force to pull back the user's hand, but this was not what the research team wanted to achieve.
Through continuous current stimulation experiments, researchers are now able to create a more realistic feeling, even simulating the tactile sensation on the surface of objects. Researchers believe that the virtual reality experience not only requires visual stimulation, but also requires more convincing haptic signals.
Pedro Lopes, one of the project's chief executives, said: "More importantly, the extra hardware required to achieve this effect is minimal."
Of course, there is still less hardware needed to put the device into a backpack and then use a USB headphone connection device such as the Samsung Gear VR, plus a hand-held tracker and motion capture system. Therefore, "very little hardware" is only a relative concept. It means that there is no need to complete experiments in the laboratory. However, this system is still not suitable for ordinary families.
Now, researchers and developers are constantly working hard to make our familiar virtual reality experience more real, but the question is whether mainstream gamers really need these features. Even if pure virtual reality game users want to experience the system, There is also less need to install complex tracking devices in your own home. Perhaps most users just want to sit on the sofa to experience the charm of virtual reality, and do not want to walk around at home. Therefore, this research will focus more on the field of virtual reality in the future, rather than ordinary game players.
