Recently, Renesas Electronics Corporation, a semiconductor and solutions provider, announced the launch of R-IN32M3 series of industrial Ethernet communication chips that can support multiple communication protocols in response to the rapid application of industrial Ethernet communication technology in the market.
One of the most notable features of the R-IN32M3 series products is the high-speed operation of the basic functions of the real-time operating system (real-TIme OS) in hardware, thereby realizing high-speed real-time response to industrial Ethernet communication and high-precision communication control. Since the hardware in the new R-IN32M3 series bears a large amount of computing load of the CPU, the combination of the CPU and the integrated real-time operating system load-reduction engine (HW-RTOS [Note 1]) can achieve ultra-high-speed real-time response, which is faster than traditional software Real-time operating systems are 5-10 times faster. In addition, the fluctuations caused by the inconsistency of the computing time of the traditional CPU processing system are greatly reduced to 1/5 to 1/10. The new R-IN32M3 series includes an integrated ARM Cortex-M3 CPU (100 MHz). The new Ethernet controller can support industrial Ethernet communication protocols such as CC-Link IE [Note 2] and EtherCAT, and will also support the control area network (CAN) [Note 4] and universal asynchronous that are widely used in industry Transceiver (UART). In addition, Renesas Electronics also plans to develop SSCNET III / H [Note 5] optical fiber network standard products that support fully synchronous communication to improve performance.
Due to the increasing requirements for improving factory production efficiency and improving machine control accuracy, the industrial Ethernet communication market also requires higher and higher communication speeds between devices and their efficient central control systems. In this case, improving the fast real-time response time and reducing the processing time deviation have become particularly important issues for communication and machine control. In addition, reducing product cost, reducing power consumption, and improving safety are also more important in this area than in other markets. The newly developed R-IN32M3-CL and R-IN32M3-EC are designed to meet the requirements of these industrial network markets.
Main features of R-IN32M3 series products:
(1) Integrated real-time operating system load reduction engine (HW-RTOS) and Ethernet accelerator
Industrial Ethernet communication application systems are required to support a large number of tasks, high-speed time synchronization and low power consumption. By embedding real-time operating system processing in the hardware (previously, it would take a lot of CPU load) and standard Ethernet communication protocol processing, such as check calculation and header sequencing, the processing speed can be increased by 5 to 10 times. The HW-RTOS driver is compatible with µITRON. There are plans to support more operating systems in the future.
(2) Support multiple communication protocols (CC-Link IE, EtherCAT, EtherNet / IP, etc.)
R-IN32M3-CL supports the CC-Link IE protocol, which contains a circuit that supports the CC-Link IE Field slave stack controller. CC-Link is a 1 Gbps industrial Ethernet communication standard. It is the fastest communication protocol in the industry and is promoted by the Japan CC-Link Association, which specializes in promoting open networks. In addition, R-IN32M3-EC supports the EtherCAT protocol, which includes a slave stack controller that supports the EtherCAT industrial Ethernet communication standard. Both chips have an ARM Cortex-M3 (100 MHz) 32-bit RISC CPU, a low-latency dual-port switching media access controller (MAC) and large-capacity on-chip memory required by the Industrial Ethernet protocol . The EtherNet / IP protocol, FL-net and other protocols supported by the software are in the final preparation stage. In addition to having a communication interface that supports industrial Ethernet, communication interfaces such as CC-Link, CAN, serial peripheral interface (SPI), and UART can also be implemented. Therefore, the R-IN32M3 series can be used as a gateway for industrial Ethernet networks Module use.
(3) R-IN32M3-CL with 1 Gbps MAC and R-IN32M3-EC with 10 / 100Mbps EtherPHY R-IN32M3-CL includes hardware with CC-Link IE protocol, plus a 1 Gbps Ethernet MAC, so , 1 Gbps Ethernet communication can be achieved by adding an external 1 Gbps EtherPHY. The R-IN32M3-EC contains a 2-port 10 / 100Mbps EtherPHY, so there is no need to add an external PHY, thereby reducing the size of the module board. Regardless of whether you use an external PHY or an internal PHY, the hardware purchase cost is basically the same.
