Infineon and Elektrobit teamed up to bring a hardware and software solution that enhances in-vehicle communication performance and meets current requirements

The new features of the car require electronic control units that are networked to each other and networked with the cloud. Embedded information security is one of the most important aspects. This applies to driver assistance systems, over-the-air software updates (SOTA) and autopilot functions. Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX / OTCQX: IFNNY) and Elektrobit Automotive Co., Ltd. (EB) will work together for a long time to work closely on vehicle network security issues. The two companies bring a perfectly matched hardware and software solution that enhances in-vehicle communication performance and meets current and future security requirements. The solution is based on Infineon's second-generation multicore microcontroller family, AURIXTM (TC3xx), and tailored zentur HSM solutions from EB.

The AURIX family of microcontrollers controls communication processes, performs monitoring and security tasks, and supports vehicle safety protocols. Each TC3xx microcontroller now has an integrated hardware security module (HSM) in which the keys are reliably generated and stored. HSM utilizes hardware-based symmetric and asymmetric encryption algorithms as well as hash functions (AES-128, ECC 256, SHA2). Therefore, HSM not only enhances protection, prevents tampering, but also significantly increases speed. Thanks to internal hardware module support, hashing (SHA256) is about 150 times faster than using a pure software solution.

This has a direct impact on RSA signature verification - and RSA signature verification is a big advantage when there is massive data, such as SOTA and autopilot applications. The combination of hardware and software—AURIX and EB's zentur HSM—can also achieve more than 100 signature verifications per second (such as using ECDSA secp256r1). In current software-based RSA applications, verification can take several seconds—depending on key length and data size.

Thomas Böhm, senior director of microcontroller business for Infineon Automotive Chassis and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, said: "The AURIX microcontroller is a key component of current and future vehicles. The combination of AURIX and the companion software stack will ensure improved vehicle information security. And help system suppliers to significantly improve performance."

For the latest hardware and software solutions, it complies with the Automotive Open System Architecture (AUTOSAR 4.3) standard and is forward compatible with AUTOSAR versions 4.2 and 4.0. This means that it is easy to deploy and integrate EB's zentur HSM software in existing projects.

Secure Boot is the foundation of all subsequent security features. This is a time-critical feature that requires a lot of computing power because each individual control unit must log in to the network in a very short time. When the system starts up, it checks the storage contents for any tampering. Thanks to this hardware and software solution, the CMAC computing power is 62 MB / s. Since EB's software stack has been optimized for AURIX and HSM, it can check 1 MB of data in 16.2 milliseconds. There are no other industry players in the industry that can do this, which is 2.5 times the best record so far.

MarTIn Schleicher, executive vice president of EB business management, said: "As software becomes more complex and the number of in-vehicle systems and sensors increases steadily, the communication within the in-vehicle system grows geometrically, which means that an efficient security mechanism to prevent unauthorized external access is Indispensable. Thanks to Infineon's hardware knowledge and EB's extensive experience in developing software information security solutions, we have teamed up to create an ideal solution for reliably protecting control units."
