GLII: The global OLED lighting market will reach $4.2 billion in 2015

In the past, OLEDs have been successfully applied in the field of small and medium size display, and in the field of lighting, OLED is gaining momentum.

OLED is the abbreviation of "Organic Light Emitting Diode", which is translated into "Organic Light Emitting Diode" in Chinese. It is a semiconductor device that can convert electrical energy into light energy.

The main principle of illumination is: under the driving of an applied voltage, electrons and holes are injected from the cathode and the anode to the transport layer, respectively, and electrons and holes migrate from the transport layer to the organic light-emitting layer, respectively, and combine to form excitons and emit light. The molecules excite and emit visible light. Simply put, OLED luminescence is the stimuli of luminescent materials by current stimulation.

It is widely expected in the industry that when the luminous efficacy of OLED lighting products reaches 100lm/W, its market demand will explode. At present, cost is still the most critical factor restricting the launch of the OLED lighting market. As more R&D units and manufacturers join, production costs are expected to drop significantly.

Recently, the High-tech LED Industry Research Institute (GLII) released a report that by 2015, the global OLED lighting market is expected to reach US$4.2 billion.

OLED lighting has obvious advantages

Currently, white OLEDs for illumination are mainly realized by two methods. First, the wavelength conversion method is to use a blue OLED to excite red, orange phosphor or phosphor powder to generate white light. Second, it is a color mixing method, that is, using three primary colors of red, green, and blue, or using white or orange light to generate white light by means of doping or multi-layer.

OLED lighting has soft color, high energy efficiency, wide viewing angle, light weight, softness, fast response, wide temperature range, strong seismic resistance, and OLED is surface-emitting, no need for external lampshade, heat dissipation, etc., and has unique advantages in lighting field. .

At the same time, in the field of special lighting, in the past, baby jaundice treatment was irradiated with blue fluorescent light, but the light would damage the baby's eyes, and the OLED lighting has dimming performance, which can avoid harming the baby's eyes during treatment. In addition, as a surgical light, the surface light source does not produce shadows and dead angles, and heat dissipation is easy, which is beneficial to the operating room environment.

Compared with LED, OLED lighting also has certain advantages, mainly reflected in the following aspects:

1. The OLED light source is a flat light source, which can emit any color, as well as the depth and intensity of the hue. The color rendering index is close to 100, which can mimic the daylight color. Second, due to the light, soft and transparent characteristics, when the OLED lighting is turned on, It can be used as a surface light source for the whole piece; when closed, it can be used as a transparent window, and the OLED has obvious advantages in the field of indoor lighting.

It is generally believed that if the luminous efficiency of OLED exceeds 100 lm/W, it is expected to replace the general lighting products.

The market is still in the incubation period

At present, OLED lighting market promotion is constrained by factors such as high cost, high price and short life. Global OLED lighting manufacturers are still in the initial stage of trial production or mass production, and the product yield rate is low.

The development of OLED lighting is not long, and the market awareness is not high. It is one of the reasons why the market does not grow rapidly on a large scale. At the same time, the range of suppliers of materials and equipment for the manufacture of OLED lighting fixtures is small, and the low maturity of product technology is one of the reasons for the high cost of products.

As manufacturers begin to develop the market, as well as improve technology and improve production processes, the yield and light efficiency of OLED lighting products can be gradually improved, production costs will continue to decline, and the problem of high product prices will be solved. The lighting market will show a doubling of growth in the early stages of LED development.

From 2011 to 2015, the global OLED lighting market will continue to grow at a multiple rate. GLII expects the global OLED lighting market to reach US$4.2 billion by the end of 2015.
