Development and Reform Commission: China will build solar power projects through open tendering

China's second-largest energy consumer, China, plans to build a solar power project through public bidding to reduce power generation costs, a move aimed at increasing the share of renewable energy in all energy consumption.

Shi Lishan, director of the Renewable Energy Division of the Energy Development Bureau of the National Development and Reform Commission of China, said after attending an industry conference on May 26 that China plans to increase solar power generation by introducing “reasonable competition” in this emerging industry.

China plans to invest 1.5 trillion yuan (US$196 billion) in the 15 years before 2020 to increase the use of renewable energy and reduce pollution. China hopes to account for 16% of renewable energy sources, including wind, solar and bioenergy, by 2020.

Shi Lishan said: "We will have major initiatives in improving solar energy use next year."

Shi Lishan said that China hopes to bring solar power capacity to 300 megawatts by 2010 and 1,800 megawatts by 2020. He said: "If we do not take further measures, we will face challenges in achieving this goal."

Shi Lishan said that China has produced the equivalent of 180 million tons of standard coal using renewable energy, accounting for 7.3% of total energy production.
