Tencent Digital (Wen Xin) According to the TechRadar website, in the first quarter of 2016, sales of various types of fitness trackers worldwide reached about 20 million units, which shows that many people in the world care about their health.
But according to a new study, these people should worry more about the safety of their fitness trackers collecting data. Researchers at Darmstadt University of Technology and the University of Padua conducted a study of 17 model fitness trackers sold on the market and found that they had serious security holes.
Although almost all tracking systems using cloud services use HTTPS and other encryption protocols to transmit their data, researchers can tamper with the transmitted data in almost all cases. In an attack, they succeeded in "persuading" the tracker to "tell" the server that the user had walked 80 million steps in one day.
TechRadar said that although four vendors have taken some measures to protect the integrity of user data, researchers have found that these measures are insufficient to protect data security. Ahmad-Reza Sadeghi, head of the research team, said: "These measures are not enough to stop motivated hackers. There is hardly any need for IT knowledge. Hackers can modify data."
This is a problem because fitness tracker data is increasingly being used in court, and some insurance companies offer premium discounts to users who share fitness data. Hackers can easily gain economic benefits or influence criminal trials.
TechRadar said that not only that, the researchers also found that several manufacturers store fitness data in the clear text. If the device is stolen or infected with a malicious piece, it will bring the risk of the data being hacked.
Sadiji stated that “health insurance companies and other companies that wish to use fitness trackers in their services should seek advice from security experts†and that technology to prevent this already exists, but “vendors deploy these technologies in their products. It needs to make more efforts."
A similar study conducted earlier by Binghamton University and Stevens Institute of Technology found that leaked data from fitness trackers revealed the user’s bank password.
