New Safety Standard for CSA Compact Fluorescent Tube Luminaires

Standards development organizations CSA Group CSA Standards has released a new C22.2 No. 1993-09 self-ballasted lamps and lamp adapters standard, mainly for common spiral lamps and energy-saving lamps.

With the entry into force of this new standard, CSA Standards ' sister agency, CSA International, can provide Chinese luminaire manufacturers with appropriate testing and certification services to help them successfully export compact fluorescent products to the North American market.

CSA Standards , CSA International , and OnSpeX , which provides consumer product evaluation, inspection, and consulting services for retailers and manufacturers, are all branches of the CSA Group. As a leading organization, CSA Group has been focusing on developing new standards for health, safety and sustainability over the past 90 years, providing testing and certification services for many different industries, and providing consumer product assessments for retailers and manufacturers. Inspection and consulting services.

The C22.2 No. 1993-09 Self- Ballasting Lamp and Luminaire Adapter Standard was released in October 2009 and is in line with the United States (UL1993) and Mexico (NMX-J-578/1-ANCE) standards to ensure compact fluorescent lamps and Other similar fixtures sold in the North American market are able to meet safety standards.

The standard covers the requirements for types of lamps such as fluorescent lamps, compact fluorescent lamps, high-intensity discharge lamps, LEDs, and tungsten halogen lamps. New requirements include a new plastic housing minimum material specification, and several additional end-of-life tests that more realistically simulate the possibility of product failure.

Self-ballasted luminaires, such as compact fluorescent tube luminaires, typically have a built-in spiral filament at the bottom to control start-up and operating current. Although the lifetime of compact fluorescent tube luminaires is longer than that of incandescent bulbs, there is still the problem of “ end of life ” , that is, fluorescent tube luminaires have entered the end of their life cycle, but some time before their burning. Some of the early compact fluorescent products had occasional fever when they reached the end of their lives, causing the lamps to smoke or the base of the lamp to fade or deform.

With increasing awareness of reducing energy consumption, such as the effective use of lighting electricity by homes and businesses, CSA Group continues to provide multiple environmental solutions through its three branches, covering benchmark standards and GHG registration. And training and consulting services in environmental performance testing and product certification.
