Reporter: In the 2005 opening and closing ceremonies, how was your plan being matched?

Cai Guoqiang (hereafter referred to as Cai): At that time, I was led by an overseas artist creative team, not only for fireworks professionals, but also for outstanding artists such as dance. It is impossible for overseas teams to take up all the work of the opening ceremony because they are not familiar with the communication with relevant domestic departments, but I think we can assist the general director to make the opening ceremony more artistic, international and modern. Throughout the Olympic Games, visual arts special effects are very important to the opening ceremony, and visual creativity such as fireworks is my long term. We emphasize the perfect combination of art and technology, especially the use of a lot of high technology, which should be an important factor in the phase. I remember that after listening to my statement, the chairman of the organizing committee, Liu Qi, was very excited. After that, he said to the candidates of the bidding director group: No matter who you are the general director, you should find Cai Guoqiang. Finally, according to the commission of the Olympic Organizing Committee, 13 bidding teams have been selected and integrated to form the Olympic opening ceremony team.

Reporter: You have been living overseas for a long time, and it is notorious for its mainstream influence in China. It is probably from the 2001 APEC large-scale landscape fireworks display. Did the success of that event have an impact on the bidding for the Olympics?

Cai: Of course it has an impact. Participating in government-sponsored events can have a better understanding of the government and China and enhance confidence in doing things well. At the same time, the government and the mainstream people have a new understanding of modern art.

Reporter: After entering the Olympic team, is the work smooth?

Cai: The theme of this Olympic Games should reflect the Green Olympics, the Science and Technology Olympics and the Humanistic Olympics. My creativity is reflected in all three. Minister Wan Gang of the Ministry of Science and Technology said that the Olympics should let the people see the influence of high technology. The science and technology of this Olympic Games is very high. The equipment such as communication system, command system, information release, etc. are highly modernized, but most people may not see it, but the fireworks are different. They feel it at a glance, and they are all exciting at once. My work has received full support from all relevant departments, and the science and technology department has also allocated research funds for this purpose. The Institute of Aerospace Research has also invested in research. In more than two years, due to factors such as the lack of synergy of the themes and the difficulty of creative techniques, after the constant revision, adjustment and optimization, many of the original contents of the opening performances have long been beyond recognition. Fireworks technology is the most advanced in the world

Reporter: I heard that you have been home in the early morning and even in the morning. Over the past two years, you have invested almost all your efforts, and your hair is whiter and thinner than before. Since there is no big change in creativity, why is it so tired?

Cai: According to the plan, the fireworks technology used will be the most advanced in the world. Some of the technology I have used in the United States, and the other part is completely new. As a result, the work did not go smoothly. For example, air emission, pyrotechnic bomb explosion depends on chip control. The traditional practice is to ignite the fuse line while launching. Due to the influence of air, pressure, dry humidity, etc., the error is generally one tenth of a second, and the naked eye can't see it. At the same time, the graphic lines appear; while the chip control is used, the information is activated to activate the air while the explosion time error is only one thousandth of a second, and the air pressure can also be adjusted in the computer. I used the chip to do several activities in the United States, the air has not been done, only the Disney family has this technology. The launch of the air-launched bomb is not high, only 50 meters. Besides, the air-explosion of the fire-breathing bomb can't leave the physics principle. The air launches explode from the center, and the explosion wave circle expands. It is easy to spread. If a circle is circled, it may be scattered into a solid circle. . To ensure that people can see clearly, the time is shorter, and the explosion may have disappeared without seeing it clearly. Another weakness is that many conceptual special effects art is being played over the city, involving a second explosion that puts management pressure on the police. There is also a bright spot in our plan, that is, fireworks are set off in 29 places along the central axis of Beijing's city, reflecting the history of stepping into the Olympic Games, but these places are outside the nest, and there are many important cultural relics on the way, which are sensitive. The security is very difficult. In order to cooperate with my work, the police dispatched a large number of personnel. This is a considerable support in the case of police force, and it is also possible under our system. When I was in trouble, a researcher in Beijing, Mr. Chen, helped me develop a kind of flare. After launching from the ground, it ended at an altitude of 150 meters. There was no secondary explosion. The launch method used a rolling type to use the pressure of the launching cymbal. Make adjustments and change the emission in speed to achieve the effect.

Let the whole city become the opening scene

Reporter: The performance of the opening ceremony extended to the urban area outside the stadium and the Juyongguan Great Wall. Has the previous opening ceremony of the Olympic Games been similar?

Cai: No, our idea is to make this ancient city a scene of opening ceremony. Tiananmen Square, Great Wall, Yongding Gate, etc. have all become places for the publication of the works, so that the citizens of the city can participate in the opening ceremony and enjoy this unforgettable history together. In an instant, it reflects the characteristics of the Olympic Games.

Reporter: You used to do a work in the Netherlands. The content was on the last day of the 20th century. The cigarettes were sent to the citizens of thousands of households. At dinner, everyone was burning in the fireplace. The whole city was full of smoke and nostalgia. a feeling of. It can be said that the place where your work is published is the entire city. Has this idea been inspired by similar experience?

Cai: Of course, there is an impact. The APEC landscape fireworks show is also like this. The venue is on a long, Wan Guo style building on the Huangpu River, not a specific location. Through the big scenes, more people can be shared. I creatively adhere to the characteristics of modern art and at the same time integrate the specific connotations of the Olympic Games.

The most stunning visual effect in Olympic history

Reporter: What is the meaning of the theme of fireworks?

Cai: The preparation for two or three years is only 20 minutes. After bidding, the director group determined that the fireworks show should not only match the overall creativity, but also have its own meaning, that is, sacred, magical, brilliant, splendid, and demand the most shocking effect in history. We combine the metaphor of history and culture with the art form full of creativity. At the same time, the Great Wall and the Bird's Nest ignite a shape, showing the dialogue between ancient and modern times and across time and space. The architectural characteristics, design concepts and performance process are merged to achieve the realm of harmony between man and nature.

Reporter: In November last year, 14 sketches of your APEC landscape performance were sold at the Christie's Autumn Auction in Hong Kong for more than 70 million Hong Kong dollars, setting off the auction record of contemporary Chinese artists' works. After the Sichuan earthquake, your work "The Crocodile in the Sky" was auctioned in Beijing Guardian, and the total of 5.8 million yuan was donated to support the reconstruction of the Yi culture and art. Through the participation of APEC Landscape Fireworks and the two large-scale art events at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, what do you think is the promotion of modern Chinese art?

Cai: Being able to participate in the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games is the most precious time in my life. I think, first of all, the opening of the country, in order to accept modern artists like me to come back to work. The leaders of the Olympic Organizing Committee, the municipal government officials, and the opening ceremony creation team are very concerned about me. In the 30 years of reform and opening up, China has made tremendous achievements and its international status has been greatly improved.
