Get rid of loneliness! VR can help autistic children improve social skills

Although most children with high-functioning autism have an average level of intelligence, they usually have social problems. The lack of social networking and the difficulty of expressing one's own ideas may lead to social isolation and inferiority. However, according to a survey conducted by the Center for BrainHealth of the University of Texas in Texas, a new virtual reality training program can have a positive impact.

Dr. Nyaz Didehbani, a clinical researcher, said: “People with autism may be overwhelmed and nervous in social situations. The virtual reality training platform provides participants with a safe place to train social skills.”

Their findings have been published in the journal Computers in Human Behavior. Researchers say participants who completed the training program have improved their social cognitive skills and have also gained better interpersonal relationships. In neurocognitive tests, their ability to identify emotions, understand other people's opinions, and solve problems have been significantly improved.

In the study, 30 children with high-functioning autism (ages 7-16 years old) were divided into two groups. The two teams completed 10 one-hour training sessions for a total of five weeks. Participants learned social skills and practices, including meeting with their peers for the first time, how to deal with bullying, and inviting someone to a party. The child also interacts with two clinicians through a virtual character. One of the doctors is a coach, providing them with guidance and guidance. The other doctor acts as a conversation object and acts as a classmate, bully, teacher, or other role according to the needs of the scene.

Tandra Allen, subjective of the virtual training project, said: “This research is based on our previous research on adult autism patients. This study also shows that virtual reality may be a platform that can help these two age groups. This is the first study that combines the purpose of improving social skills and participants. We observed that their relationships in real life are improved. They also have the ability to initiate and maintain dialogues, interpret the emotions of others, and judge the quality of friendship. Got promoted."

Daniel Krawczyk, a professor of cognitive neuroscience and epidemiology, said: “We are pleased to be able to observe improvements in all aspects including emotion recognition, social attribution and reasoning. These results demonstrate that virtual training methods can enhance core social skills. ."
