Intel expects mainstream USB 3.0 applications to wait until 2012

Intel expects mainstream USB 3.0 applications to wait until 2012

On March 11th, the SuperSpeed USB 3.0 standard has been around for a while. However, it has not been widely used. Although there are many flash drives, hard drives and other external storage devices with USB 3.0 capabilities, there are still many factors that continue to limit the application of this new interface. The main problem is the lack of joint support from Intel and Microsoft. This means that USB 3.0 device manufacturers must continue to rely on EMC chips, while OEM manufacturers are still waiting for Microsoft Windows to natively support this interface. Therefore, a USB 3.0 solution with a speed of 4GB per second is likely to become a mainstream application in early 2012.

The launch of Windows 7 is not long, but Microsoft is already working on the next version of the operating system, which is Windows 8. This operating system may be launched at the end of 2011, but it is likely to be launched in 2012. Intel and Microsoft are collaborating to implement local support for this new interface standard. Therefore, until this new operating system is introduced, USB 2.0 will continue to be the mainstream solution. Only high-end products will be equipped with this faster technology.

Considering that the USB Implementation Forum has certified 50 products, this period may surprise many consumers. However, the above predictions made by Intel are consistent with the predictions of market research company In-Stat. In-Stat predicts that USB 3.0 will be widely used in 2012. By 2012, sales of USB 3.0 compatible flash drives will reach 200 million.

In-Stat also predicts that by 2012, 70% of external hard drives will use a USB 3.0 interface. Intel disclosed its cooperation with Microsoft at the CebiT meeting. However, people who are keen on speed still hope that some rumors suggest that Windows 7 SP1 will support USB 3.0 is true, although this is unlikely.
