Intel AMD Plans Greater Development of Embedded Chip Market

November 24 news, according to foreign media reports, Intel and AMD are planning to develop new processor products in order to promote the development of their x86 products in the rising embedded device market.

Intel's newly released Atom processor E600C series yesterday; and AMD's upcoming APU G-Series will be launched in the first quarter of next year.

Embedded chips are mainly used in the field of tankers, ATM machines, vending machines, digital signage, automotive and industrial equipment; currently the market size has reached 10 billion US dollars, and the market size is still growing.

Both Intel and AMD have been involved in the embedded market for many years, but other chip vendors, especially Qualcomm, Samsung, and Texas Instruments, are the main market leaders; and they use ARM processor designs to develop products. With the accelerating growth of the embedded market, Intel and AMD are gradually discovering the growth potential of this market. For them, the development of the market is expected to exceed their PC and server chip business.

For Intel, a key driver is the development of the Atom processor E600C series; its former code name was "Tunnel Creek". Intel is integrating Altera FPGAs products that enable device manufacturers to provide customers with customized applications such as military, industrial, and transportation. In addition, these chip products can also be upgraded and reinstalled according to the situation when used by customers.

In addition, the integration of Atom and Altera technology allows Intel engineers to put more functions on one processor; this reduces the number of chips that need to run various functions, enabling device manufacturers to create smaller products. The E600C series actually encapsulates the codename Tunnel Creek's Atom E600 embedded processor core and Altera FPGA on a single chip. Based on the programmable features of the FPGA, customers can configure the two-in-one processor differently to meet the needs of different applications.

AMD's G-Series marks the company's introduction of the Fusion solution to the embedded market, integrating low-voltage x86 CPUs and high-end graphics technology onto a single chip. Earlier this month, the company’s official spokesperson on AMD’s Financial Analyst Day said they are about to launch the eBrazos platform. Cameron Swen, senior product marketing manager at AMD, said that integrating the image engine into the manufacturer's APU design is the biggest difference from other embedded products. This gives equipment manufacturers greater flexibility in designing products, and customers can buy more features. The G-Series can support Open CL and other software for applications that do not require more graphics capabilities but require high-performance computing.

AMD plans to expand its embedded capabilities in the future and in one step. The upcoming R-Series will greatly change the function of AMD's "Llano" APU.
